By law, every county in the state is to have a law library. Act  142 of 1976 states: County law libraries, including libraries maintained by bar associations or independent library corporations, or both, shall receive from the county such necessary funds, accommodations, goods and services, as shall be specified by general rules or orders adopted by the governing authority after consideration of the recommendations from time to time of the State Law Library... All such county law libraries shall be operated in conformity with general rules or rules of the court of common pleas of the judicial district embracing the county and shall be open to the general public.

The Fayette County Law Library is opened Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 12 Noon and from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. It is closed for all national holidays. It is located on the second floor of the Fayette County Courthouse in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

The librarians are Elida Micklo and Bonnie Petros. Mrs. Petros is the Assistant Law Librarian. She graduated from West Virginia Career College in Morgantown, West Virginia, with an Associate Degree as a Legal Assistant. She also attended California University of Pennsylvania for two years. Elida Micklo is retired from the Connellsville School District with over 33 years as a secondary school librarian. She took paralegal classes after retirement and has served since 1992 as librarian.

The law library contains only law books. This means that the library has all state and federal laws and/or regulations. It also has state and federal reporters which have important court cases. None of the books can be taken from the library, but copies of pages can be made. Cost of copies is $ .25 per page. Fax service is also available at the following cost - $ 1.00 per page for 1 thru 5 pages, and $ .25 per page thereafter. Fees are adjusted to cover long distance rates when necessary.

LEGAL ADVICE CAN NOT BE GIVEN BY THE LIBRARIANS since they are not attorneys. However, the librarians can assist you in finding the information you need.
