In 1998, Pennsylvania celebrated the 10th
anniversary of Act 101, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste
Reduction Act. More than half of Pennsylvania's municipalities make recycling
available to their residents, who compromise nearly 75 percent of the state's
population making Pennsylvania's program the largest in the nation.
In 1998, 1,472 municipalities offered recycling
programs.
This is nearly 4 times the number of municipalities
required to recycle under state law.
Act 101, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling
and Waste Reduction Act, instituted recycling and waste planning in Pennsylvania
in 1998 and by 1997, the Commonwealth had reached its 25 percent goal and
set a new goal of recycling 35 percent by 2003.
Nine of the state's 67 counties have already
met the new goal.
Fayette County, recycling 38.9 percent of
its waste is one of the leaders.
But we are not going to stop there.
Recycling protects the environment and creates
jobs.
Soon the County will be adopting the second
10 year Solid Waste Management Plan.
Our goal for 2003 is to have recycling available
in every municipality.
With 17 Curbside programs and 11 Drop-off
programs the County is on its way fulfilling that goal.
As County Commissioners we endorse the Fayette
County Recycling Program and the Governor's aggressive recycling goals. |
